Feelin Lucky

My dad has informed me that I'm a terrible blogger because I haven't gotten to it in over a month. He's right. But here goes...

Entertainment:
The ski trip was a success, no injuries and I was able to make it down the mountain several times. I won't say that i'm ready for a double black diamond, but i could get there one day. I'm much more of a beach guy anyway, I've since decided.

Nic made me watch He's just not that into you. (Corny) I just wasn't that into it. Neither was Nicole, she fell asleep. I proceeded to hold her eyelids open because if she was going subject me to this, then I would have to do the same. eye for an eye(lid).

The new season of 24 is good, The Office hasn't dissapointed, and Criminal Minds continues to please. I also watched all three Godfather movies in succession, and you really get a good feel for the Don's life when you watch Al Pacino age 20+ years in 9 hours (over two days).

Sports:
Ravens lost. Steelers won. A tale of two, blue collar, crime ridden, cities. I'd not reccomend visiting, living in, or even going near either of them, if you value your life or your wallet.

Tar Heels are still #1 in the ACC laying the smack down on Duke @ Cameron Indoor. Also beat down NCSU twice, no surprise, as Coach Roy Williams is like 12-1 against NCSU in his illustrious career as a Tarheel. Many supporters don't think they have what it takes to go the distance this year but I'm pretty sure they'll cut down the nets in Detroit.

I've decided I want to go watch a Washington Capitals game sometime soon, Hockey is underrated.

Work:
Sucks. I haven't had anything to do in over a week now, I've complained (asked for work) to everyone with little remorse nor additional to-dos. I guess they won't mind when I blog during company time and study up on my college basketball.

Interview tomorrow for the Equity assistant trader position at Stifel. Though its doubtful I'll take it, i'd still like to make a good impression given the future implications. never know when you'll need to know someone in that industry.

Poker:
Richard and I are going to Atlantic City this weekend, Thursday - Saturday. What a god awful place. Atlantic City is literally what would happen if everyone in Vegas were clinically depressed. I actually thought Slumdog Millionaire was going to be the story of Atlantic City. It should be cool though, because my long time college friends Dan, Fisher, Trevor, and a few other notable characters will be up there during the same time. I saved up enough money where I would be able to comfortably play and lose, if luck so has it, but that doesn't mean i won't be pissed off. it won't be the monetary loss but rather the blow to my ultra-sensitive, overly exxagerated ego. I have to retain that killer instinct. I have enough for 5 buy-ins at $1/$2 No Limit and some spending cash. Won't be playing much roulette or blackjack unless i'm winning. I'm pretty good about setting / keeping limits these days, thanks to my credit card bills and $1000/mo rent.-

Life:
Have to watch Georgia for the next few days until i leave for AC, then I have to watch her again next week. I told Nicole I'm the actual dad and she just gets weekend custody.

Brad put his initial deposit into UMD dental school which is like 10-15 blocks from my house. He would start in August; he is waiting to hear from VCU but he didn't get in and he either will get in from the waiting list or go to UMD. Could be cool to have another good friend in the area, for both of us. Doubtful that we'll live together, I think he wants to live with other students that share his life schedule. I could see how it would be distracting if your roommate never had to study, though i'd probably choose to live with someone i know but don't have to be around all day long, and make friends through school. But that's mainly stemming from my working with/living with kuzon and Goldman, both of which were sort of overkill bc i saw them 24/7. I'm not too particular either way, I could save some money by living with a roommate but at the same time, I like living alone. Important thing would be having another friend in town. Lots of IFs yet.

Played basketball for the first time in forever Saturday. It just adds to the many reasons of why I want to go back to school (intramural sports teams). Its not like I took it for granted neccessarily back then, but I sure do miss be able to go to the gym with my friends on a random weekday and play pick up games for 2 hours a day. My gut misses it too.

Speaking of school, signed up for an online GMAT course that work paid for. $1,549. March 15 - May 25 or something, Sunday nights. If all goes according to plan, I can enroll in the business school of my choice August 2010. Which means one more year of work...

Sorry this blog wasn't as quip-filled or funny as the previous two. work has stripped me of my motivation to be creative, anecdotal, or otherwise clever.

I eat Burgers All Year 'Round

Sports
First off what the HELL UNC? You come off my prediction by starting the 2009 championship run with a home loss? great.

Other than that, the Ravens did me a solid by winning their first playoff game. I'm going on the record saying that I think Baltimore will beat Tennessee and Pittsburgh on route to a SuperBowl matchup against Carolina Panthers (who will have to beat Arizona and New York Giants).

Life
Going snowboarding in two weeks. I think I'm going to buy a snowboard off of craigslist for 100 bucks or so. Seems like a good investment considering rentals usually go ~40 bucks a day including the insurance and i'll be there for 3 days. Plus i should get repeat use, I've been told that there's a place to go snowboarding like an hour west of here.

Work
Still sucks. haha.

Likes of the Week
Berger Cookies - a delicious baltimore tradition
Sushi - a delicious japanese cuisine
Banjo-Kazooie - a sweet old school video game

Dislikes of the Week
Boston College - a stupid basketball team

Reccomendation of the Week
Go build something with your hands. Assemble something, rearrange some furniture, hang a picture, frame a diploma. The sense of accomplishment you feel will really jumpstart your mood for the rest of the day.

Rant of the week
Whole Foods grocery store - what a waste of a trip I made over there...
overpriced? Always. Leave it to America to make PROCESSED foods cheaper than not.
missing staple items? Yep. Gotta love a grocery store that can only be SUPPLEMENTAL to your routine harris teeter/shoppers/safeway/food lion.
Crowded? You better believe it. They do more 'open-store' shelf-stocking than Wal-Mart. And don't get me started on the 'trendy' weird people they hire.

But the thing that really got my goat : the butcher acted offended when i asked him why they didn't have any premade burger patties (usually they have them with either jalapeno/cheddar or feta/onions/sun-dried tomatoes) -- apparently its only a summer thing.

What's really going on here? The entire premise of the store is not based on that which any normal business would base its merit on (i.e. Supply and Demand - I demanded some burgers) but rather the entire establishment is premised on an overriding concept that the people that shop there are better than 'commoners' eating their non-organic food products - and that snobbishness spills over onto an awful sales staff.

Sorry Whole Foods -- I eat burgers all year around.

2009 - G(r)o(w)ing Up

OK, now that we've established 2008 as a starting point, I think most can agree that the only way to go from here is UP.

Merc's view on Success
If life is a ladder, then we clearly don't all start out on the same rung. Therefore the only way to understand how successful we are is to look at where we were and count the rungs that you've moved. The most successful people may never make it to the top rung but you better believe they've gone a long way from where they started. Here's to a successful 2009 to all of us.

Goals:
Break 720 on my GMAT, setting me up to go to a sick B-School. Duke? UVA?
Not get arrested. (yes - what a lofty goal)
Keep in touch with all of my closest friends / relatives.
Make some better, less troublesome, friends in Baltimore.

Predictions:
UNC wins a National Championship in Basketball
My mom buys a house in North Carolina
Brad gets into VCU Dental School, Chrissy and I have our pick from our top choices of schools
My dad finally spends a full Christmas in California
Nicole sets a personal record on the Columbia Triathalon
My aunt Joann (F) gets accidentally pregnant again!

A New Day, A New Year

Decided to start a blog. Preffered means of communication is type-based (texting, gchatting) and this way I can avoid calling loved-ones, haha. Evil.

Year in Review:

If I had to title the past year it would be "a Lifetime of mistakes"

January / February
Year started off slow. Paid a lawyer $1000 to make a Virginia speeding ticket go away. Got lucky that it didn't affect my insurance premium. Visited Liz in Europe. Spent $1600. Had a lot of fun, but realized that was not going to work. Ended things with Liz. Made several trips down to Carolina while my friends were still students.

March / April
Got sick with Mono. Caught up on a lot of sleep. Played a lot of Halo with Brad and Thomas. Missed college. Started hanging out with a she-devil named Sara. Locked up from the get go? my hands were cuffed? Insert whatever pun you want. $1700 later that legal matter was behind me. Tarheels went to the final four only to lose to Kansas.

May / June
Work gave me a crappy bonus. Claimed that the economy was bad and that the company underperformed. Then they turned around and promoted me. I guess I should've been more happy but they promoted 7 other peers. Didn't feel too distinguished -- If I'm worth the same as them then I'm not being utilized to my full potential. Finally moved out of the place with Kuzon. I think I vowed never to live that dirty again.

July / August
Moved in with Goldman and Skelly. Spent a lot of money going to bars and hanging out, but at least I had some friends that I hung out with outside of work. Signed up for a basketball league at the Merritt gym, but it was poorly run, 4v4 and I kept having to travel for work on game days. Nicole 'made moves' on me (inside joke). She told me it was a terrible idea that we would hang out. I wouldn't take no for an answer. she's not mad anymore :).

September / October
Brad and Chrissy came up and saw my new house. Lots of fun times during these two months. Continue to see Nicole, mostly because I like Georgia (haha - kidding). Went on an awesome vacation with her to NC. Easily the best part of the year. Messed up the paint on my car driving through Federal Hill.

November
Got into it with Goldman over his sign being broken / fight on Halloween night. He's the biggest baby in the world. Forced me to move out or he would say I assaulted him. Lost what I considered to be a good friend, and moved into a new place (2 bedroom 1 bath). Had to put another $1000 deposit down, and buy $1000 worth of furniture. Also had to pay $300 for moving and $200 to fix my tooth. He told work, though they assured me that there would be no problem with it. He also told work about Nicole and I. 10 days later, they threaten Nicole's employment status and make me sign a disciplinary action form. They permanently ruin any loyalty I have towards the company. I'm just working for a paycheck.

December
I tried to make a lot of the money back that I had lost over the year betting sports / playing poker. -$3000 later, I decided to never bet on sports again. Note to worried people: I'm not addicted. I stopped. Please don't give me any additional shit about it. Its the same gambling that last year paid like $10,000 in student loans, got me a bunch of new furniture including two new HDTVs, and a $10,000 down payment on my BMW. I visited Memphis. Don't see what the big deal is about Elvis, lol..the guy sucks. I do see what the big deal is about their bbq. Delish. I enjoyed my Christmas with the family. I got some cool presents and was able to make a few people smile along the way.

I'm ready for a New Year.
